Smithfield Municipal Services Building

The building was completed in 1995 and was then called “The Urban Council Smithfield Complex”.  It was formerly a cattle quarantine depot annexed to the slaughterhouse in Kennedy Town.  Can you imagine the time when the cattle roamed around the area before being slaughtered?  The cattle depot was closed down in 1986, and was redeveloped into the then Kennedy Town Swimming Pool, Smithfield Market and Smithfield Municipal Services Building to address the shortage of recreational facilities in the Western District.  The slaughterhouse was relocated to the then Kennedy Town Abattoir on Cadogan Street in 1968.  The development of the municipal building has provided supporting facilities to the residential neighbourhood in the vicinity.

The Kennedy Town Swimming Pool was opened in 1974. The pool was built by the Urban Council and was the first public pool in Western District. In order to make way for the Kennedy Town Station, a new swimming was built at 2 Sai Cheung Street North as a replacement of the old swimming pool. The new swimming complex was opened on May 2011 and became a popular spot for swimmers in the area.
